A typical homeless family consists of (in KY, TN, NC,
SC) is a 31 yr old woman w/ 2 children; slightly more of a chance to be
African American, a high school education w/ a 50/50 chance of
employment, has been homeless for on average 11 months and are most
likely experiencing homelessness for the 1st time
Education & employment no longer prevents
homelessness, the is no socioeconomic indicator for who is or will be
homeless
43% (of the homeless in this region) were on public
assistance for less than 11 months and 28% have never been on welfare
The no. 1 reason homelessness effects the working
poor is finances. The median income for our region is $988 per month
compared against the basic family need costs that are childcare, food &
housing; the family would need to earn 120% ($1185) more than they
currently earn to break even
Foreclosures occurring in Kentucky; RealtyTrac
reported 8,793 foreclosure filings in the state last year, up 23.5
percent from 2006. Nationally, foreclosures leaped 75 percent last year.
